Hammer

This is a letter to Hammer. On Monday you wrote a wonderful blog about what all you do for your family on any given day. You got a lot of great comments about this blog. But what I found missing was what Hammer does for himself.

All the things you do for your family are great but you need to take care of yourself. If you don't look out for yourself no one else will.

I suggest you get a good treadmill. After the kids are in school and before you start anything else, get on the treadmill for at least 45 minutes and walk fast enough that you raise your heart rate for the entire 45 minutes. You should be breathing hard and sweating. Make a tape or a video of your favorite music, the kind you enjoy. I like Abba and Queen.

This sustained activity on the treadmill will lower your blood pressure, allow you to loose weight, and might even lower the ringing in your ears. At any rate, you will be so tired in the evening that you will sleep and not even notice the ringing in your ears.

This treadmill activity should take place everyday and eventually it will be a habit. You will be doing your children and your wife a favor because you will feel better and you will live longer.

Thanks :)

It is a good idea and you actually read my mind because we were just discussing what I should do to improve my health.

I just sent the treadmill to goodwill a couple months ago but now I'm starting to walk the kids to school. It's about 30 min round trip twice a day. It's amazing how much better I feel after doing it.

Wise words. Wish I had listened and actually HEARD them about 3 years ago. Sigh... I was told something similar but it didn't sink it at that point.

This is great Hammer, for you and for the kids.

VW Bug, it is never too late to start.

I have a tread mill and I use it when the weather is too bad to go outside. There's a little lake near our house, and the walk around it is one mile. My wife and I try to do that walk every day after work.

My daughter points out that right now, if I croak, I'll be dead but she'll be poor, so she'll have the worst of the deal.

Hermit, your lake sounds really great. While I am on my treadmill, I try to place myself back in Okla on Waurika Lake.

I reckon this is good advice for anyone. But I got this problem other than being too damn lazy..thoirty minutes on that treadmill and the next day my knees are swollen twice the size they are supposed to be. So I just wander around sweetthing's half acre and try to get a little bit of exercise..that and bedroom aerobics is about it for me.

You do know that bedroom aerobics will make something besides your knees swell up. Don't worry though, it's usually temporary.

I try to do the treadmill when I'm done lifting weights, but after about six or seven minutes my left knee gets pains, and my lower back (I have four bad disks) screams bloody murder. Plain old walking doesn't bother me as bad. I can hike for miles without the same problems.
